Feedback as a tool of employee motivation in banks

Renata Leśniak

Summary
Purpose: Currently, banks are much focused on their sales performance and ef-fective operation, which makes their managers’ level of motivation a key issue. Feedback has a positive impact on employee motivation if applied suitably. Feed-back applies to the evaluation of an employee’s work performance and his or her contribution to the organisation.
Methodology: This article shows the results of an empirical study. The interview was conducted with managers working in Polish banks. The main aim of this study was to find out how managers use feedback, how well they are prepared for using this tool and how they rate the usability of feedback in everyday work. This prob-lem is closely related to the widespread evaluation process developed by banks to assess the work performance of their employees.
Findings: The interview shows that regular feedback faces several obstacles, in-cluding mainly excessive workload for managers, lack of knowledge of feedback techniques and prejudice against feedback. In spite of that, feedback is judged posi-tively in the context of motivation, especially, if used regularly and designed for the individual employee.
